GENERAL
INFORMATION
Pula is the largest town on Istrian
peninsula. It has a population of 65 000
inhabitants. It developed in the inner part
of an almost completely enclosed, easily
protected bay where Austria built an arsenal
and its largest naval base in the middle of
the 19th century. Pula is today an important
harbour and industrial town. The town has a
highly developed artistic, cultural and
educational life. With its good traffic
connections, numerous cultural and
historical sites, pleasant climate, very
attractive coastline and beautiful beaches,
Pula has become a major tourist resort.
Among numerous famous writers who visited it
were Dante Alighieri, James Joice, Thomas
Mann, Franc Lehar. With the union of
historical sites and modern architecture
this is a town You must visit.
SPARE TIME
The most significant monument is the
Amphitheatre (Arena), one of five
amphitheatres in the world, as well as one
of the best preserved Roman structures of
its kind in the world. There is also a
permanent exhibition "Olive and wine growing
of Istria in the Antiquity" (open from 8.00
am-8.00 pm). There are other monuments to
visit: Augustus temple with the ehibition of
Roman portrait sculpture (open from 10.00
am-8.00 PM), Hercules's and Twin gates, Sergius arch. In addiction to well preserved
ancient buildings, there are many fragments
of Roman architecture and mosaics. You
should also visit the Archaeological museum
of Istra located in the Kastel, a grandiose
Venetian fortress from the 17th century (open from 9.00 am-8.00 PM). Visit also
numerous musical and culinary events every
day on town's squares and in restaurants. In
the evening one can visit the town square or
have a drink in Pula's best bars: Aruba,
Zen, Podroom, E&D and Monte Serpente.
